In 1998, Osceola County, the City of Kissimmee and the Kissimmee Valley Audubon Society submitted an historical/environmental preservation project to the Florida Communities Trust. The project was selected for funding, and in May of 2001,  the property was acquired.

The 182 acre property contains a diversity of habitats, from sandhill to cypress swamp. It contains trails, a boardwalk, and several historic buildings, including the Steffee Homestead.

(Nina Steffee started the Kissimmee Valley Audubon Society, and Elizabeth Steffee, was our most prominent leader.)

The KVAS intends to:

Rehabilitate the Steffee House and to open it as an educational and visitors center.

House a multi-media environmental refrence library for study and research.

Use the facilities to offer educational programs to the community, ie. classes, lectures and programs, and make it available to other groups for educational purposes.
